Leadership Killeen Launches First PR & Media Relations Day
Leadership Killeen Launches First PR & Media Relations Day

On Thursday, Nov. 20, Leadership Killeen participants experienced a brand-new addition to the program’s curriculum: the first-ever PR & Media Relations Day. Hosted at Central Texas College, this inaugural event highlighted the essential role that media, public relations, and strategic communication play in shaping community trust and strengthening local organizations.
Centered on the theme “Crafting the Message: How Media Builds Community & Business Reputation,” the day offered an in-depth look at how stories are told and why effective communication matters for every leader. Sessions were held in the Anderson Campus Center Board Room.

Launching the Day With Insight and Transparency
Central Texas College Chancellor Dr. Michele J. Carter welcomed participants and underscored the importance of transparent communication in leadership. Her remarks helped frame why Leadership Killeen added PR & Media Relations Day this year: to equip rising leaders with a deeper understanding of how messaging influences public perception.
Inside the Newsroom: Understanding Local Media
At 9 a.m., attendees joined Killeen Daily Herald Business Reporter, Joseph Bahr for Inside the Newsroom, a session exploring how journalists choose stories, what makes a compelling media pitch, and how reporters balance objectivity with community impact. Participants also reviewed press release formats and learned best practices for engaging with local news outlets.
Lights, Camera, Connection: Learning the Language of TV News
The morning continued with an interactive broadcast journalism workshop led by KCEN 6 News evening anchor Baylee Bates. In Lights, Camera, Connection, Bates walked participants through preparing for on-air interviews, staying on message, and using visuals effectively. A live Q&A gave attendees an opportunity to get candid advice from a seasoned anchor.
Public Radio Behind the Scenes
After lunch at the CTC Patio Café, participants toured KNCT 91.3 with General Manager Matthew Negri. The tour highlighted how public radio serves the community, how stories are shaped for a listening audience, and how organizations can request PSAs or interview opportunities. For many, it was their first up-close look at the important role public media plays in sharing local stories.
Strategic Communication for Modern Leaders
The day concluded with The Power of Strategic Communication, led by Wendy Sledd, Chief of Marketing and Communications for Central Texas College. Sledd discussed how leaders can build trust through consistency, navigate crises with empathy, and develop an authentic brand voice—skills crucial for today’s rapidly evolving communication landscape.
A New Chapter for Leadership Killeen
This inaugural PR & Media Relations Day marks a significant step forward in the Leadership Killeen program. By expanding the curriculum to include communication and media literacy, the Chamber is helping equip future leaders with the tools they need to represent their organizations—and the Greater Killeen community—with confidence and clarity.
